Anwar also called for the immediate and unconditional release of nearly 50 people detained over the weekend. "I regret the harsh and violent action by police to foil the peaceful gathering," Anwar said in a handwritten note given to reporters by his family members during his ongoing sodomy trial. He said several people who were not involved in the gathering had been arrested, while the office of the National Justice Party (Keadilan) headed by his wife had been raided. "Police have used this opportunity to oppress political parties and activists that criticise the government," he said. Demanding the detainees be freed, Anwar said the people's right of speech had been obliterated by the actions of government leaders who viewed peaceful gatherings as a threat to public security. "The police should act professionally and not allow their institution to be used as a tool to protect the interest of corrupt and avaricious leaders," he said. About 50 Anwar supporters, including three Keadilan leaders, were Monday remanded to assist police in a probe into Saturday's street protests to mark the first anniversary of his sentencing. Both Keadilan and rights group SUARAM have called for the release of the detainees. SUARAM described them as "victims of arbitrary detention," saying the remand was equivalent to punishing the detainees without trial. Police used water cannons and teargas Saturday to disperse protesters in the city centre. Heavy security foiled plans for a mass rally and a march to the palace to submit a memorandum on Anwar's case to the king. Anwar, sacked by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in September 1998, was jailed for six years last April for abuse of power and is now on trial for sodomy, a crime punishable by up to 20 years in jail. Anwar, 52, says he is the victim of a high-level conspiracy because he intended to expose corruption and was seen as a political threat to the premier. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Your high school sweetheart-where is he now?
