Detainees forced to perform sex show

7pm, THURS: Detainees were forced to perform oral sex
on one another and smear their faces with sperm, a
Bangladeshi witness in the "false news" trial of
Tenaganita director Irene Fernandez recounted today.
Moron Mozumder, 44, in his seventh day of testimony,
told the court that he saw 120 Burmese detainees in
the Kemayan illegal immigrant detention camp forced to
perform various sexual acts by five or six police
guards.
When asked by defence counsel M. Puravalen what was
the police's reaction, Mozumder, who broke down into
tears at this point, replied, "The police were
laughing and clapping (their hands)."
However, he appeared too traumatised to answer more
questions on the oral sex act, prompting magistrate
Juliana Mohamed to call for a break.
When the court resumed 30 minutes later in the
afternoon, Mozumder said that he could not continue
with the testimony.
"Even if I take five minutes (break), I cannot give
evidence," he said, forcing the defence counsel to
seek an adjournment.
"In light of this constraint, I have to ask an
adjournment," Puravalen told the magistrate, and the
court was adjourned to tomorrow.
The hearing was also abruptly adjourned five minutes
after it resumed earlier this morning.
Mozumder sobbed uncontrollably when he was asked to
elaborate on the forced mass masturbation punishment
by the police guards in the camp.
"I witnessed the (masturbation) punishment four to
five times," he said.
Yesterday, Mozumder told the court that the detainees
were forced to rub soap on their penis and masturbate
one another.
However, when Puravalen asked, "Who gave the soap?",
Mozumder began to weep, prompting the magistrate to
call for a break.
When the court resumed later, Mozumder testified that
he saw the sex acts clearly as he was standing on the
first-floor corridor of the building block he was
detained in.
"It was between 6 to 7pm. I saw it happening with my
own eyes," he said.
He said that the detainees were herded by the police
to an open field, ordered to strip naked and forced to
masturbate.
Speaking through court interpreter M.A. Ferdous, he
also told the court that those detainees who refused
to masturbate were beaten by the guards.
Many of the detainees cried, he said, because it was
too painful for them to masturbate as their bodies
were too weak.
"Most of them kept their eyes closed, most of them
were screaming due to pain," he said.
Fernandez is being charged with "maliciously
publishing false news" after she released a memorandum
about tortures and deaths in the illegal immigrants
detention camps at a press conference in August 1995.
The women rights activist and KeADILan supreme council
member faces three years in prison if convicted. She
is currently out on bail.
The trial, which began in June 1996, has become the
longest trial in the country's legal history, running
into its 228th day today.
