Delegates to the Umno general meeting unanimously adopted a four-point resolution urging "firm and effective measures" against "radical groups and supporters of negative culture who misuse religion to sacrilege Islam and undermine Muslim resilience and national security". While not mentioning the Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) by name, the resolution calls for stronger cooperation between Islamic scholars and government leaders to promote true Islamic teachings and curb extremism. It pledges support for efforts to make Malaysia a model for the advancement of Muslims and Islam. Religion has become a political battleground in Malaysia, where just over half the population are Muslim Malays. PAS, which is challenging Umno for their allegiance, has been fiercely attacked during the four-day meeting for allegedly distorting Islamic teachings to win votes. But there were also voices of reconciliation. Selangor Umno delegate, Redzuan Addul Hamid, said Umno should hold talks with PAS for the sake of Malay unity. "Umno has too long been at loggerheads with PAS. We need to talk. Attacks against one another only erode Malay unity. This must stop. "PAS has long asked us to hold discussions but Umno has ignored it," Mr Redzuan said. "We have to have a political truce." Mr Khairul Azmi, from Johor, proposed Umno hold a meeting of all Islamic scholars irrespective of their political affiliation to discuss challenges to Islam. -- AFP Copyright © 2000 Singapore Press Holdings.
