          PAS : KE ARAH PEMERINTAHAN ISLAM YANG ADIL
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                     LETTERS
                     May 16, 2000
                     We can survive without Umno
                     As a non-Umno Malay/Muslim professional, I think
the call
                     of Dr.Mahathir Mohamad in his closing speech in
Umno
                     General Assembly that Umno leaders and members
"must
                     now learn to operate in a 'hostile environment'"
(New
                     Sunday Times, May 14), is a sign of paranoia. He is
trying
                     to infest it to others too.
                     Mahathir was also reported to have said that "we
must
                     imagine that everyone is hostile towards us" and
"that may
                     include quite a vast section of society ..."
                     So, Umno is trying to start a civil war against
non-Umno
                     Malaysians? What is it trying to do? Don't we have
the right
                     to treat Umno as what it should be: just a
political party
                     that competes for power in the democratic
framework?
                     However, it seems that Mahathir has continued to
assume
                     that Umno is the nation, and those who are hostile
to Umno
                     is also hostile to the nation. How moribund is this
kind of
                     ancient Eygptian thinking!
                     Umno is not the nation. Umno is not even identical
with the
                     Malay community because as the results of the last
                     general elections show, Umno is just one of the
three
                     parties that are supported by Malays/Muslims. In
the 60
                     hardcore Malay/Muslim constituencies, Umno only
received
                     48.6 percent of the popular votes, while PAS and
KeADILan
                     obtained 51.4 percent in combination.
                     My family and myself have never been members of
Umno.
                     We have been with PAS. My grandfather joined PAS
when
                     it first formed in the 1950s. Without Umno, we
survive, and
                     survive honestly without material and moral
corruption. I
                     hope new Malay oppositionists in Parti KeADILan
Nasional
                     would be like us in PAS too: learn to survive as a
moral
                     community without the patronage of Umno. PAS'
                     experience has shown that, Insyallah, good Muslims
can
                     survive and prosper without Umno.
