MAY 19, 2000 KL blasts Jakarta official's criticism of Anwar
case
Foreign Minister Syed Hamid says Indonesian Speaker Amien
Rais violated the Asean spirit of non-interference in
members' affairs
KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia yesterday lashed out against a top
Indonesian lawmaker who criticised Prime Minister Mahathir
Mohamad's government for its "uncivilised" treatment of
jailed politician Anwar Ibrahim.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said the
criticism by Dr Amien Rais of the treatment of the jailed
Malaysian ex-deputy premier also violated the Asean spirit
of non-interference in members' internal affairs.
"I regret that the statement is not only inaccurate,
offensive to us but is ignorant of the system of justice in
our country," he said.
Dr Amien, chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly,
said in Jakarta on Tuesday that Malaysia should treat Anwar
as a political detainee and no longer as a common criminal.
"The uncivilised handling of the Anwar Ibrahim case, which
has been going on for too long, should be stopped," he told
a news conference after meeting with Anwar's wife, Madam
Azizah Ismail.
He said Anwar had served Malaysia well and deserved good
treatment.
He said Indonesia should also help find a solution to the
Anwar saga, but quickly added that the effort should not be
interpreted as "interference" in the domestic affairs of
Malaysia.
He also urged Dr Mahathir to learn from the fate of former
Indonesian president Suharto and the late Philippine
dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
Dr Mahathir fired Anwar in September 1998, accusing him of
being an immoral homosexual. Anwar was subsequently
convicted of corruption and sentenced to six years in
prison.
He is now on trial for sodomy, a crime in predominantly
Muslim Malaysia, and faces another 20 years in jail if
convicted.
Datuk Seri Syed Hamid said Dr Amien might disagree with the
charges levelled at Anwar but that was not his jurisdiction.
"This is what is happening in Malaysia and our action is in
accordance with the judicial system in Malaysia," he said.
"I believe Amien Rais might have erred in his views because
of his loyalty to a friend but then again the law doesn't
recognise friends or foes." -- AFP, AP
