As evidence unfolds in the ongoing investigations, government agencies have
been criticized for withholding information, possibly in some widespread
cover-up. In June 1996, the Pentagon admitted after years of denial that
hundreds of American troops may have been exposed to mustard gas and the
deadly nerve agent Sarin during the demolition of an ammunition depot near
the southern Iraqi village of Khamisiyah in March 1991. Although the CIA
informed the Army in 1992 that U.N. investigators, visiting the ruins of the
depot in October 1991, had confirmed that it contained chemical weapons, the
Pentagon did not make this information public until 1996.
