COMMUNITY MEMBERS URGED TO REPORT VISITS BY LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES
(WASHINGTON, DC - 1/3/2000) - CAIR is calling on members of local Muslim
communities to report any visits they may have had from local or national
law enforcement agencies that could be viewed as intimidating or
inappropriate.
In the last few days, the FBI and other agencies questioned dozens of
ordinary Muslims in several major cities in so-called "knock and talk"
operations. A number of those questioned tell CAIR they do not know why they
were targeted. They also say they were approached in a manner that led to
unnecessary anxiety for them and their families.
American Muslims support strong law enforcement and condemn terrorism in all
its forms. We also treasure civil rights. The right to be politically active
and to hold different beliefs/views is protected by the Constitution. While
visits from the FBI and INS are appropriate information-gathering tools,
intimidation, arrest without probable cause and community-wide "sweeps" are
not. (CAIR has in the past met with local and national FBI officials to
express concerns about targeting of the American Muslim community.)
