Subject: [BUNGARAYA] Morally Bankrupt Mahathir Must Resign

                MORALLY BANKRUPT MAHATHIR MUST RESIGN

21.06.2000

Mahathir finally did it. In a display of arrogance and contempt for
public opinion and the Constitution, Mahathir extended the service of
Chief Justice Eusoff Chin, in defiance of public anger over the
irrefutable case of Eusoffs misconduct and his public lying about it.

This latest Mahathir atrocity on democracy, coming on the heel of his
own failure to defend his integrity in the face of courtroom revelation
of his corruption and implication in fabricating false evidence against
Anwar Ibrahim, virtually seals his credentials as a morally bankrupt
Prime Minister, unfit to continue in his office.

The above scenario would have caused a national crisis of sufficient
gravity to topple a government in any democracy. But not in Malaysia.
Prime Minister Mahathir has happily travelled to a distant country to
attend theG15 Summit, nonchalant about the commotion surrounding him.

How can he stay so cool? Answer: the Attorney General (AG), who is
supposed to pick up the pieces from the courtroom and institute
investigation on Mahathir, happens to be in deep waters himself. He was
also implicated in the same courtroom in the fabrication of evidence
against Anwar. A former Chairman of the Bar Council, Manjeet Singh
Dhillon, testified in the Anwar Trial on 12th June that he wrote a
letter to the AG complaining the AGs senior prosecuting officer was
blackmailing Manjeets client to fabricate false evidence against
Anwar. In Manjeets subsequent meeting with the AG, they discussed on
possible alternative charge on Manjeets client, but the AG has never
refuted the serious allegation in Manjeets said letter until this day.
AGs implied involvement is therefore obvious. Hence, forget about
knocking on AGs door.

Then what about the Police? Cant they step in to investigate? Yes,
they can, but they wouldnt. Both Anwar and Keadilan Nasional Party
had promptly lodged separate police reports, requesting for joint
investigation by Police, AG and the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) on
Mahathir over the courtroom allegations. To date, all the three parties
remain silent. The same silence that met numerous past police reports
by Anwar and the Opposition parties over multi-million dollar corruption
scandals substantiated with irrefutable documentary evidence, involving
Mahathir and his senior colleaques. This wall of silence remains
unbreakable, in spite of repeated protests by the Opposition both inside
and outside Parliament, thanks to the collaborating local mass media
(willingly and unwillingly).

Even in the unlikely event that cases involving Mahathir and his clique
should come to the courts, there is still the last line of defence V
the judiciary. Now you understand why Mahathir is so insistent that
Eusoff must stay on as the Chief Justice. As Mahathir said earlier I
think Eusoffs term will be extended because we have a need to see that
every thing is in place before there is a change. With the Anwar Trial
approaching a grand finale with potentially explosive evidences from
possible star witnesses such as Mahathir ( whose appearance is still
under appeal), Daim, Megat Junid, Aziz Shamsuddin etc, it is not
difficult to understand the meaning of those words of Mahathir. The
Anwar Trials have so far proceeded as planned under Eusoffs
stewardship of the judiciary, what better way to ensure these trials
will also be concluded as planned than to have continuity in the
tested stewardship of Eusoff?

Intelligent observers of politics will have detected from the foregoing
the existence of a closed chain link structure consisting of Prime
Minister, AG, Police, ACA, Judiciary and mass media, with the Prime
Minister in the center commanding each entity. It is the effective
functioning of this power structure that has enabled the Prime Minister
to overcome all scandals and challenges from whatever direction.

A close look at this power structure will tell us that it is not
efficient strategy to allocate too much energy in chipping at the links,
for these are replaceable as shown in the case of the former Inspector
General of Police Rahim Nor. Priority must be given in dealing with the
central command if we want to loosen the unconstitutional stranglehold
on political power in this Country.

Coming back to the issue at hand: how should we deal with the current
crisis of confidence in the judiciary and in the Prime Minister?
Mahathirs current conduct leaves us with only one conclusion: subject
himself to the laws of this Country, or resign forthwith as Prime
Minister.
