Several versions of boy's death
By Sharanjit Singh 19 June 2000
ALOR STAR, Sun. _ The coroner's court here today heard different
versions on the cause of death of a 15-year-old boy who died while in
police custody.
The police version was that the boy died of drowning but the
post-mortem showed he died somewhere else and was later placed in
water.
The court presided over by magistrate Mohd Redzuan Abdullah was also
told police had never lodged an official report on the death of Woo
Boon Leng on March 30, 1995.
"The police say Woo died of drowning after he fell in a drain while
trying to escape.
"However, doctors say he died somewhere else and his body was put in
the drain later. This is because the post-mortem showed there was no
water in his lungs," said Simon Murali, holding a watching brief for
Woo's family in an inquest to determine the actual cause of Woo's
death.
The court was earlier told three detectives from Butterworth had
arrested Woo from a video game outlet in Alor Star.
The detectives later claimed Woo drowned while trying to escape as he
was being driven to the Butterworth police station.
Murali also told the court one of the detectives had informed doctors
at the Yan Hospital that Woo's body was found near the Gurun toll
plaza and police believed he was an accident victim.
He said facts produced in the inquest showed there was enough
circumstantial evidence to indicate detectives and another civilian
travelling with them were responsible for the boy's death.
He also said the evidence showed the detectives had lied in court
when they said the boy drowned.
Simon said the court should make a finding that the detectives had a
case to answer under Section 304 of the Penal Code which carries a
maximum 20 years' jail sentence. Mohd Redzuan fixed July 30 to state
the court's findings.
