Commercial had character with Muslim name praising bacon-cheddar Whopper
(WASHINGTON, DC, 3/14/2000) - Alhamdulillah (praise be to God), CAIR today
announced that Burger King Corporation will pull a radio advertisement
viewed as offensive by American Muslims.
A number of Muslim listeners contacted CAIR to complain about the ads in
which a character using the Muslim name "Rasheed" read a poem praising
Burger King's bacon-cheddar Whopper sandwich. (Bacon is a pork product
forbidden by Islam.) The commercial also had "Rasheed" using the greeting
"peace" and being introduced to "brothers and sisters" in a coffee house.
Burger King officials say the commercial will be withdrawn and rewritten to
delete the references that Muslims found objectionable.
"It is important for any company to respect the sensitivities of its
customers. We commend Burger King for its quick action and thank those
Muslims who contacted CAIR to express their concerns," said CAIR Board
Chairman Omar Ahmad.
Just last month, North Carolina-based Total Sports, Inc., a leading sports
information provider, agreed to stop using an advertisement that showed a
group of Muslims "praying" to a basketball.
SOME OF CAIR'S LATEST SUCCESSES:
MINNESOTA - MUSLIMS ALLOWED TO PRAY ON THE JOB
Officials with Minnesota Diversified Industries (MDI) tell CAIR that a
policy has been adopted allowing Muslim employees to offer their obligatory
prayers during work breaks. The policy came after some 20 Muslim workers
quit in a dispute over being able to offer their Maghrib prayers.
PENNSYLVANIA - MUSLIM STUDENTS CAN SWIM IN PRIVACY
Muslim high school students in Williamsport, Pa., are now being allowed to
take their mandatory swimming lessons in private after CAIR intervened on
their behalf. The school had been giving the female students failing grades
when they refused to swim in the presence of male instructors and students.
The school has now instituted a program that allows the Muslim students to
fulfill their requirement by swimming before others arrive.
FLORIDA - MUSLIM WORKER GIVEN RIGHT TO WEAR BEARD
A Muslim worker at a MacDonald's restaurant in Tampa, Fla., has been granted
the right to wear a beard. The worker applied for the position and was
offered on the condition that he shave his beard. When contacted by CAIR,
the owner of the franchise agreed to make religious accommodation and allow
the beard.
