GOOD NEWS - MUSLIM WORKER GETS BACK PAY AND APOLOGY
(WASHINGTON, DC - 3/25/1999) Alhamdulillah. A Long John Silver restaurant in
Virginia has agreed to rehire a Muslim woman who was sent home for wearing a
religiously-mandated head scarf. The woman began wearing a scarf in December
and was allowed to continue wearing it until an inspection by an area
manager.
The day after the inspection, she was asked to remove her scarf. When she
arrived at work wearing the scarf the next day she was sent home.
After being contacted by the worker, CAIR took her complaint to Long John
Silver's corporate headquarters. Following discussions, the company agreed
to
rehire the Muslim worker, transfer her to another store, and provide full
back
pay and a raise.
GOOD NEWS - MEDIA PROVIDE POSITIVE COVERAGE OF HAJJ
Many local, national and international media outlets have provided accurate
and
positive coverage of Hajj and the Muslim community. Prior to Ramadan, Eid
ul-Fitr, Hajj, and Eid ul-Adha, CAIR sent media kits to religion writers,
feature editors, television assignment editors, and Muslim activists
nationwide. This effort resulted in:
* Dozens of inquiries from media outlets
* Interviews on the subject of Ramadan and Hajj by dozens of print and
broadcast journalists.
* Positive articles from almost every state in the nation. Alhamdulillah
(Praise be to God).

to show appreciation for fair, accurate and balanced reporting. Let's take a
moment to say thank you," said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad.
