PRO-ISRAEL GROUPS ATTACK MUSLIM APPOINTEE
Muslims urged to show support for Rep. Gephardt's commission choice
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/30/1999) - CAIR is calling on the American Islamic
community to defend a Muslim appointee to the National Commission on
Terrorism. The appointee, Salam al-Marayati, director of the Muslim Public
Affairs Council (MPAC), is under attack by pro-Israel groups and
publications.
Today's New York Post, a newspaper known for its anti-Muslim bias, features
an editorial calling for Rep. Richard Gephardt (D-MO) to rescind his
appointment of al-Marayati because of allegations made by infamous Muslim-

The editorial read in part:
"When Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) first introduced legislation last fall to set
up a national commission on terrorism, Arab-American groups complained that
the proposed membership...contained 'Muslim-bashers' and others who would
'infringe upon our civil rights.'
"To that crowd, a commission whose mandate is to 'review counter-terrorism
policies regarding the prevention and punishment of international acts of
terrorism directed at the United States' is biased if it focuses on
fundamentalist Islamic groups - which are the primary source of
international anti-American acts of terrorism.
"Apparently, however, those protests have born fruit: House Minority Leader
Dick Gephardt (D-Mo.) has appointed to the commission an official who can
easily be described as an Israel-basher with disturbing sympathies for
Islamic terrorists...According to a list of public statements compiled by

The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) has condemned al-Marayati,
claiming he "justified Arab terrorism against Israel, justified future
terrorism against America, and accused America of committing terrorism."

ZOA also attacked the recent appointment of al-Marayati's wife, Dr. Laila
Al-Marayati, to the United States Commission on International Religious
Freedom and challenged an Arab-American special assistant to the secretary
of state for Near Eastern affairs over his "anti-Israel" views.
IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED:
1. Contact Rep. Gephardt to express support for his choice to appoint an
American Muslim representative to the National Commission on Terrorism.
Muslims in Missouri should make a special effort to contact Gephardt.

newspaper's attempt to marginalize Muslims. REMEMBER - Only those who can
control their emotions should send comments. This newspaper WILL use hostile
comments to harm the image of the Muslim community.
