DEBATE SESSION TURNS INTO UMNO-PAS BATTLE ZONE

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- The debate
session in the Dewan Negara here today turned into
a battle zone of sort for Umno and PAS senators as
they challenged each other on several issues
including the Sauk incident in Perak involving
                 members of the al-Ma'unah.

Senator Datuk Ghazi Ramli was debating the bill
when eight senators, one minister and one
parliamentary secretary stood up one after another
                 to seek clarification.

It was not just to seek clarification but to hit out at
PAS senators of Jamilah Ibrahim, Siti Zailah Yusoff
                 and Hassan Shukri.

When the Sauk incident was brought up, Jamilah said
that PAS had nothing to do with the Al Ma'unah
group involved in the arms heist and hostage-taking
                 early this month.

"We are not involved in such `kemungkaran'
(disobedience to God's law) and I've never heard of
Al Ma'unah group until now," she said.

Joining in, Siti Zailah said the government should be
                 responsible to the people.

"We are not against the good things done by the
government ... what is good we support. What we
are against is to allow such `kemungkaran' to go on
                 unchecked."

"For that reason, if we've adhered to the teachings of
Islam, we won't be having headache," she said,
picking on Education Ministry parliamentary secretary
Datuk Mahadzir Mohamad Khir who complained that
                 the attitude of PAS on
several issues was causing him a headache.

When the opposition questioned the government's
credibility, Rural Development Minister Datuk Azmi
Khalid stood up in defence, saying that the
government had brought many development to the
people, freeing them from the shackles of poverty.

"Poverty breeds infidelity. Also no one will hear what
a person from a poor country wants to say," said
                 Azmi.

When several senators raised the Al Ma'unah issue,
Hassan stood up, requesting that the issue should
                 not be discussed.
