Urge support for the Secret Evidence Repeal Act of 1999 (H.R. 2121)
(WASHINGTON, DC - 11/4/1999) - CAIR is calling on local Muslim communities
to contact selected members of the House of Representatives (or key staff)
to seek their support for the Secret Evidence Repeal Act of 1999 (H.R.
2121).
Hearings on this legislation will take place next week in the House
Subcommittee on Immigration and Claims. The act, introduced by Reps. Tom
Campbell (R-CA) and David Bonior (D-MI), would prevent the use of secret
evidence in Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) deportation
hearings. Many American Muslims and civil libertarians believe secret
evidence is unconstitutional and that it is used disproportionately against
members of the Muslim and Arab-American communities.

"It is hard to escape the conclusion that a process as antithetical to our
legal system as holding someone accountable in court on the basis of
material he cannot directly attack can never be legitimate."
