CAIR CONDEMNS LETTER-BOMB ATTACKS ON AL-HAYAT NEWSPAPER
WASHINGTON, DC (1/03/97) The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a
Washington-based Islamic advocacy group, today condemned what it called
"cowardly" letter-bomb attacks on the Washington offices of Al-Hayat
newspaper and at other locations within the United States. CAIR also offered
the following advice, based on recommendations from law enforcement
agencies, to individuals and groups that might be the target of such
attacks:
WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
(Make sure all those who receive mail or deliveries are aware of these
precautions.)
* Be on guard against any unusual item received through the mail or
delivered to an office.
* Look for names and addresses that are not accurate.
* Determine whether the sender is known to the addressee. Be suspicious when
there is no return address.
* Watch for "foreign" or distorted handwriting on the item.
* Look for poorly wrapped, stained, bulky or lopsided packages.
* Be careful when items are labeled "private," "confidential" or have other
unusual restrictions.
* Look for wires, noises, odors, or an excessive amount of postage.
WHAT TO DO
* DO NOT open the package or letter.
* DO NOT put the item in water.
* Isolate the item and secure the area immediately.
* Close nearby doors.
* Open windows in the immediate area to help vent explosive gases.
* Contact your local Police Department (dial 911) and Postal Inspector for
assistance.
