SUPREME COURT ACTION SUPPORTS MUSLIM RIGHTS
(WASHINGTON, DC - 10/7/99) - Alhamdulillah. CAIR has applauded a Supreme
Court action this week that left intact a lower court ruling supporting the
right of Muslim police officers to wear beards. The officers, Shakoor
Mustafa and Faruq Abdul-Aziz, say wearing a beard is a religious
requirement. The earlier ruling said the Newark (N.J.) Police Department's
no-beard policy was discriminatory because it allowed medical but not
religious exemptions.
ILLINOIS COLLEGE INSTALLS FOOTBATHS FOR MUSLIMS
William Rainey Harper Community College in Palatine, Ill., has installed
footbaths for its Muslim students. The footbaths were installed during
planned bathroom renovations at the college. In planning the renovations,
the college's physical plant director included the low-to-the-ground sinks
that can serve as footbaths during the day and which custodians use to dump
mop water at night. The footbaths have provoked some criticism from other
students who say public funds should not be spent for religious purposes.
CAIR-OHIO HELPS WORKERS GAIN PRAYER RIGHTS
CAIR-Ohio has intervened on behalf of Muslim workers who sought the right to
attend Friday prayers. At first, officials with National Electric in
Columbus, Ohio, said no. They said were afraid if workers left, they would
not come back. They were also concerned about the precedent such a move
might set.
The company ultimately allowed the workers to take off an hour and a half
each Friday for prayers.
VA. JURY AWARDS MUSLIM WOMEN $250,000
A jury Portsmouth, Va., has awarded $125,000 to each of two Muslim women who
were arrested at a supermarket while wearing religious veils. CAIR dealt
with the case shortly after it occurred in 1996. The women said they were
walking towards a store to shop when they were approached by a Portsmouth
police officer who told them they couldn't enter the store with a mask on.
CAIR S. CALIF. - GOTO.COM WITHDRAWS OFFENSIVE AD
A major Internet search site has agreed to withdraw an advertisement that
Muslims considered offensive. The move by California-based GoTo.com came at
the request of the CAIR's Southern California office. CAIR asked for the
withdrawal of the advertisement after receiving a number of calls and e-mail
messages from concerned Muslims.
Muslim readers saw the ad in several computer-related magazines such as
Internet World and Inter@ctive. The ad showed an image of Muslim men
performing prayer. Below the picture, the text read: "With our search on
your site, you can build a more loyal following...Okay, so they won't
worship you, but they'll come back to your site more often."
