FLORIDA HIGHWAY PATROL DISCIPLINES TROOPER WHO HARASSED MUSLIM WOMAN
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/5/97) Alhamdulillah. (All praise is to Allah.) The
Florida Highway Patrol has disciplined a trooper who made disparaging
remarks to a Muslim motorist about her Islamic dress. In a letter to CAIR,
Acting Director of the Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Colonel Paul Taylor wrote,
"Appropriate disciplinary action has been taken against Trooper Lewis.
Trooper Lewis has displayed remorse for his conduct and we have taken steps
to prevent these actions from occurring in the future. The positive side of
this unfortunate incident is we have a greater understanding of the Muslim
religion and customs. This incident has provided an opportunity for all
members of the Florida Highway patrol to increase their knowledge and
respect of the Muslim religion through sensitivity and human diversity
training."
"When our community stands behind its members, it gets the respect it
deserves. Thanks to all those who respond to CAIR's alerts," said CAIR
Executive Director Nihad Awad. A NOTE TO LEADERS AND KHATIBS: Please remind

incidents to local leaders and to CAIR.

BAD NEWS - ROBERTSON UNRESPONSIVE TO MUSLIM CONCERNS
CAIR has received what it termed a "non-response" from Christian Coalition
leader and Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) founder Pat Robertson
concerning anti-Muslim remarks he made on a recent broadcast of CBN's "700
Club." According to transcripts of the program, Robertson said: "To see
Americans become followers of, quote, Islam, is nothing short of
insanity...Why would people in America want to embrace the religion of the
slavers...You say 'what's going on in America, when we welcome into our
society and give rights to people who are persecuting Christians around the
world.'"
CAIR issued a demand for an apology to Muslims and to CBN viewers. CAIR also
called upon inter-faith and political leaders to repudiate Robertson's
remarks.
In response to CAIR's demand, a CBN spokesperson sent a fax to CAIR
defending the accuracy of the news story that preceded Robertson's remarks,
a subject not raised by CAIR. The statement read in part: "...instead of
attacking Mr. Robertson and his ministry who (sic) is speaking out against
this terrible persecution, we would encourage American Muslims to stand with
us against these radical Muslim fundamentalists..."
