10,000 at rally but PAS says it's 100,000

The opposition party's Harakah newspaper inflates the
number of protesters at Sunday's demonstration given
by two Chinese newspapers

THE opposition Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS) showed
it was ever ready to raise the stakes in its political
challenge to the government when it exaggerated
figures to show that 100,000 people attended an
opposition rally last Sunday when the real number was
closer to 10,000.

To prove its case, PAS claimed in the latest issue of
its party organ Harakah that the headlines of two
local Chinese newspapers proved 100,000 people
attended the rally and not 1,000 as claimed by Malay
daily Utusan Malaysia.

The rally in Selangor was organised by opposition
parties to demand the release of jailed former Deputy
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Harakah story compared a report in Utusan
Malaysia, which they say is pro-government, to reports
in Sin Chew Jit Poh and China Press.

It also printed photographs of banner headlines from
the two Chinese newspapers and an excerpt from the
Utusan Malaysia article, with the heading of ""Who Is
Lying'' to highlight their point.

But what the headlines in the two newspapers actually
said was that there was nearly 10,000 and not 100,000
people at the rally.

Both the Sin Chew Jit Poh and China Press headlines
actually read: ""Nearly 10,000 People At Opposition
Rally''.

Harakah's story also quoted an opposition party leader
Rustam Sani as saying that anyone who reads both the
Malay and non-Malay newspapers would notice the big
difference in journalism standards between the two
mediums.

Harakah editor Zulkifli Sulong acknowledged the error
yesterday although he expressed surprise at the
mistake.

""I will have to check with the person who handled the
story,'' he told The Straits Times.

He also suggested that it could have been a
typographical error.

A senior Sin Chew Jit Poh editor said that it was
obviously a mistake because Harakah staff probably did
not know how to read Mandarin.

""If you know how to read Mandarin then it is clear
what we wrote,'' he said.

A China Press editor said the newspaper is considering
asking for a correction from Harakah.

Harakah, which claims to have a wide circulation of
more than 100,000 readers, gave major play to the
opposition rally attended by opposition leaders from
PAS, Anwar Ibrahim's Parti Keadilan and the Chinese
based Democratic Action Party.

It also published a wrap around photograph on its
front page of the rally.
