"Malaysia says external debt remains managable KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20
(AFP) - Malaysia's external debt
remains manageable at about 160.9 billion
ringgit (42.3 billion dollars) as of June, a minister said in
remarks published Wednesday. Deputy finance
minister Wong See Wah was quoted as saying by The Sun
newspaper that the debt service ratio -- the
proportion of annual export earnings needed to service
external debts -- was 6.6 percent. Wong said
Malaysia's conservative approach in the management of
external debt had enabled it to maintain a low
debt ratio, adding it was expected to remain stable until
the end of the year. "The federal government has
been able to make large pre-payments of the debts and
in future, it will look for loan opportunities
that will be able to service existing debts," Wong was quoted
as saying in parliament. Until end of June 1999,
Malaysia's external debt totalled 160.9 billion ringgit
which represents 56.8 percent of the Gross
National Product. Of that amount, 131.9 billion ringgit was
medium- and long-term debt. "Federal government
loans came up to 17.4 billion ringgit, non-government
public corporations 53.5 billion ringgit and the
private sector 61 billion ringgit," he said."
