Times of India : Malaysian Islamic Leaders Released From Jail

Times of India ONLINE news report

KUALA LUMPUR: Thousands of Malaysians cheered and shouted anti-Israeli slogans on
Friday as three leaders of an Islamic fundamentalist opposition party were freed from
a month's imprisonment for participating in an anti-government protest three years
ago.

Mahfuz Omar, a charismatic leader of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, or PAS, the
country's largest opposition party, and two others were released from the Kajang
Prison near Kuala Lumpur well before daybreak and driven away in a police van to
prevent them from joining the planned reception outside the prison gates.

But Mahfuz said he jumped out of the vehicle and walked back several kilometres to
join his supporters, who had been told earlier by prison officials that the release
would be at 8 am (0000 GMT).

In a speech, Mahfuz said his imprisonment for participating in a protest against a
visiting Israeli cricket team in 1997 proved that many young Malaysians did not fear
going to jail for their political beliefs.

"Not just me, but thousands others are willing to be imprisoned in this fight," he
said.

He was cheered by activists, many of whom held up banners denouncing Prime Minister
Mahathir Mohamad's secular government and posters saying, "Kill Jews. Islam is
Supreme," and "Support Intifadah."

As a Muslim nation, Malaysia has always supported the Palestinian cause, but Islamic
groups have said the country should not have any contact with Israel.

But Friday's gathering outside the prison gates was also against Mahathir, the ruler
of this predominantly Muslim nation since 1981, who is now accused by many of the
Islamic groups and other opposition parties of using undemocratic and harsh means to
remain in power.

Among those present at the prison rally were Lim Kit Siang, head of the Democratic
Action Party and Ezam Mohamed Noor, a senior leader of the National Justice Party.
Both groups are allied to PAS, but don't share its radical ideas.

Later, Mahfuz and PAS supporters gathered after Friday prayers at Kuala Lumpur's
National Mosque to hold another protest at which they again shouted anti-Israeli and
anti-Mahathir slogans.

Scores of policemen were deployed near the capital's biggest mosque, but did not
intervene to break up the protest. The protesters dispersed after about one hour.

The opposition has in recent months used every opportunity to organize public rallies
in defiance of the harsh laws against public gatherings to prove that they could
operate as a team and had the ability to mobilise huge crowds.

Mahfuz, Salahuddin Ayub and Jalaluddin Abdul Manaf, were sentenced last month as
Mahathir's government set out to prosecute more than 100 other opposition activists
who participated in a rally to demand the release of jailed leader Anwar Ibrahim.

The rally was the largest this year supporting ousted deputy premier Anwar, who is
serving sentences totalling 15 years for corruption and sodomy. His 1998 arrest
triggered unprecedented street protests against Mahathir's authoritarian government.
Anwar says the charges were trumped up to block his attempts to bring democratic
reform to Malaysia.(AP)
