Samy Vellu to help victim's family
By Wani Muthiah
PETALING JAYA: Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu has
offered to help the widow of a slash victim with a new home and a job
with the government.
The MIC president visited the family of the late A. Ganesan at their
present home in Kampung Lindungan during a visit to the area
yesterday.
He told Ganesan's widow, Lalitha, that he will talk with the Selanor
government to get some help for the family.
Ganesan was one of the first victims of the Kampung Medan clashes
which started on March 8.
This has left Lalitha, a clinic nurse, as the sole breadwinner in the
family. She has to take care of their two children, Meenalochini, five
and Srisankaran, three as well as her mother-in-law, Rajaletchumi.
Samy Vellu said he has told Selangor state executive councillor Datuk
S. Sivalingam to find a house for the family in Rawang, where Lalitha
has been working as a clinic nurse for the past five years.
"I have also asked MIC secretary-general S. Sothinathan to ask Health
Minister Datuk Chua Jui Meng to help Lalitha get a government job,''
he said.
Samy Vellu said Selangor had requested RM100mil from the Federal
Government to set up a relief fund to help squatters in areas off Old
Klang Road to get new homes.
He said he had discussed the matter with Finance Minister Tun Daim
Zainuddin on Friday.
Asked about a reported comment by Education Minister Tan Sri Musa
Mohamad that the education system was not suitable for racial
integration, Samy Vellu said: "I do not believe so.''
"We have had separate Malay, Chinese and Tamil schools for about
100 years and there has been no problem.''
He said the recent clashes in Old Klang Road were certainly not due to
the nation's education system.
"The problem arose due to poverty and the proximity of the squatter
houses,'' he added.
