PAS : KE ARAH PEMERINTAHAN ISLAM YANG ADIL

Malaysian key opposition party gets to keep "Islam" tag

KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 (AFP) - Malaysia's leading opposition party can keep the word
"Islam" in its party name following a decision by the country's traditional rulers
Thursday.
The Conference of Rulers, at the end of a two-day meeting, said it had no objection to
the use of the word "Islam" in the names of parties and other organisations.

But it will be against Islamic law to manipulate the word to confuse the public and
offenders could face legal action, it added in a statement issued to the national
Bernama news agency.

"Any individual or organisation using Islam to confuse the community or for deviant
ends runs contrary to the principles of Islamic syaria and can be prosecuted under
existing laws," it said.

The decision was a relief to the Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) which is vying with the
ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) for the support of Muslim Malays,
who make up just over half the population.

"We are happy with the decision because Islam is the basis of our struggle. We have
not misused the word in any way," PAS secretary-general Nasaruddin Isa told AFP.

In Malaysia's November 1999 elections PAS more than tripled its parliamentary seats to
27 and took control of a second state assembly, threatening the political dominance
UMNO has enjoyed since independence in 1957.

Delegates to UMNO's annual meeting last May repeatedly called for a ban on the use of
the word "Islam" in party names, saying PAS is exploiting religion for political ends.

Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has proposed talks with PAS on "Malay unity" but the
opposition party insists that UMNO first drop its calls for a ban.

The rulers' council comprises sultans from nine states, who have authority in
religious matters.
