Rise in student crime rates
JOHOR BARU: Crime cases involving students in Johor increased by 300% to 112 reported in the first five months of this year compared to 38 for the same period last year.Thefts and break-ins were the most common form of crime committed by students with 104 cases reported between January and May, said Johor chief police officer Deputy Comm Datuk Kamaruddin Mohd Ismail.
He said motorcycles were the favourite targets for such thefts with 86 cases reported in the last five months.
He said violent crime among students were under control with eight cases registered for the same period.
"The increase in thefts is an indication of a lack of discipline among our school children. There is an urgent need to contain the situation.
"The police need the co-operation of school heads, teachers and parents to keep the students away from crime," he said at a Crime Prevention Club launch for secondary schools on Friday.
