shamTHE RHODES SCHOLARSHIP FOR MALAYSIA 2002
A Rhodes Scholarship tenable at the University of Oxford is offered this year by the Rhodes Trustees and the interviews for the scholarship will be held in November 2001. The scholar-elect will enter University of Oxford in October 2002.
To be eligible a candidate must: 1. be a citizen of Malaysia, have had his or her permanent home here and also have attended a school in this country for a total period of not less than 7 years,2. be not younger than 19 nor older than 25 on 1 October 2002,
3. Have already obtained a First Class Honours degree or be proceeding towards such a degree (either in Malaysia or overseas) which he or she will complete before beginning studies at Oxford.
The qualities which Mr Rhodes specified in his will as forming the basis of selection included: 1. literary and scholastic ability and attainment; 2. qualities of truthfulness, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship; 3. exhibition of moral force of character, and of instincts to lead and to take an interest in his fellows;4. physical vigour, as shown by fondness for or success in outdoor activities.
The Rhodes Scholarship will cover all fees and a monthly allowance will be paid to meet living expenses. An economy class airfare to and from London will be provided. Appointment to a Rhodes Scholarship is made for two years in the first instance with a possible third year if the Scholar's record and plan to study warrant such an award.
