Kuan Yew concerned over PAS'
influence
KUALA LUMPUR: Singapore Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew has expressed concern
over the growing influence of PAS in Malaysia and its implications on the island
republic and the region.
"If it continues in that way and they can win over some of the Malay and
Indian parties, that will present another difficult problem for the region.
"Therefore we must prepare for all these contingencies and try our best to
meet them if they should happen," he said.
Lee's interview was posted on the website of his ruling People's Action
Party on Wednesday.
He also spoke about the threat of instability in neighbouring countries as
the key challenge facing Singapore.
"The external environment will become more uncertain," he said, adding that
"the Indonesian situation is very fluid. It will take some time to settle down."
In order to prepare for possible economic fallout from external problems,
Lee said Singapore should "adjust our workforce to the changing circumstances of
the international economy."
He said Singaporeans had to make an extra effort to have a solid base that
would enable the government to make firm and decisive moves.
Lee also said the older generation had endured great hardship for the
education and advancement of their children.
"If they had not had that stamina and that determination, there would not
be today's Singapore," he said.
