Protest for
implementation of Islam in Indonesia

PEACEFUL PROTEST FOR ISLAMIC LAW, PARLIAMENT BUILDING, JAKARTA
Yesterday while the fifth MPR plenary session was
taking place, thousands of people from Jabotabek
[Jakarta-Bogor-Tangerang-Bekasi], Bandung and Serang Lampung, from the
Hizb ut-Tahrir Indonesia group
called on the people's representatives for the total implementation of syariah (Shariah) law in the
legal system.
[begin TVRI reporter recording] The statement of the
community organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir's
stance was presented in an orderly manner outside the MPR/DPR Building. They
called on the people's representatives, the majority of whom are Muslim, to
change the existing constitution to a constitution founded on Islamic law.
This demand was motivated by their concern as a result of the multi-dimensional
crisis in order to bring about good for all humans, both Muslim and non-Muslim.
They also assessed the implementation of secular system in government as well
as the large number of bureaucrats who did not fulfil
their mandates properly was causing the many domestic problems and the lack of
any meaningful solution.
[begin HZ Indonesia leader M Ismail Yusanto recording] Our task as Muslims is to struggle for
Islam, [unknown Arabic phrase], to uphold the word of Allah. We will continue our efforts and we will continue to campaign to
explain to the community that Islamic law is the only solution. Islamic law is
the only solution to this country's unrest. What else can we hope for from
capitalism, which has ruined this country? For over 50 years we've been
following a secular system. What're the results? [resume
reporter recording] The protestors, mostly women and their children, finally
peacefully dispersed at about 1500 after the Crescent and Star Party [PBB]
