Russians Return to Afghanistan
Russian soldiers are back in Afghanistan for the first
time since Soviet troops left in 1989 - this time for
humanitarian purposes.
About 100 armed troops from Russia's Emergencies
Ministry have set up a base in Kabul. Their mission is
unclear. However, news reports quote the soldiers as
saying they are building a hospital.
The presence of the Russians has sparked interest and
some concern among Afghan citizens. But a spokesman
for Afghanistan's Northern Alliance says if the
soldiers are there to help, they are welcome, at least
for the short term.
The Russians are the first foreign troops to be seen
in the Afghan capital since the Taleban left the city.
The former Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979
and fought a 10-year war to prop up a communist
government. The Kremlin says the war cost the Soviets
at least 15,000 lives. (VOA)
