Coalition Dismisses Taliban's Death Toll Estimates

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - How many combat deaths has the U.S.-led coa-
lition suffered in 58 days of air strikes and ground action in
Afghanistan?

Media reports in neighboring Pakistan and claims by Afghanistan's
Taliban movement targeted by the strikes have cited figures ranging
from 40 to more than 2,000 people.

"Now we have checked and each and every one of these stories is
untrue," coalition spokesman Kenton Keith told reporters in Islam-
abad on Monday.

"There has been one coalition combat death in Afghanistan -- Mr.
Mike Spann -- plus a handful of injuries," he said. "That is the
figure. One. Not 40, not 65, not 200, not 2,000."

Spann was a U.S. CIA operative killed in the gunfight during last
week's revolt by Taliban prisoners at Qala-i-Jangi fort near the
northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif.

Keith also rejected as untrue reports over the weekend that the
Taliban had shot down one or more coalition aircraft.

"There have not been three B-52s, four fighter aircraft and four
helicopters shot down by the Taliban," he said. "Zero aircraft
were shot down by the Taliban," he added.

A Taliban spokesman said on Sunday his movement's forces had killed
70 U.S. Marines in an attack on Saturday on an airfield they have
occupied in southern Afghanistan.

The United States launched strikes on Afghanistan in its bid to
flush out Saudi-born Islamic militant Osama bin Laden, its prime
suspect in the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington,
and punish his Taliban protectors
