Anwar's guilty verdict upheld, unanimous decision Jul 10, 07 10:31amThe three-member Federal Court panel today unanimously dismissed ex-deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim's appeal against his conviction and six-year sentencing for tampering with police investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct.In an immediate response, wheelchair-bound Anwar told the court that the decision was a "horrendous betrayal of the public confidence in the judiciary".Proceedings started at 10am with only Chief Justice Mohamed Dzaiddin Abdullah appearing in the courtroom. He then proceeded to pronounce the judgment without reading the full 56-page written decision. "Suffice for me to state here that from the grounds [of judgment] from the court below, errors of law have not occassioned," said Dzaiddin. He added that a miscarriage of justice had not taken place and dismissed Anwar's appeal. Anwar subsequently addressed the court, condemning the judiciary for its "charade" and for trying to portray itself as having transparency. "This is all based on instructions from above," he said. In response, Dzaiddin said that he will take note of what Anwar had said. The entire process took less than 20 minutes at the end of which the public in the gallery refused to stand up as a mark of respect for Dzaiddin when he was about to leave the room. Supporters to protestAs soon as news of the decision was announced, the 400-odd Anwar supporters outside the courtroom began to express their dissatisfaction by shouting "reformasi". Keadilan Youth exco member Badrul Hisham said he would be leading a peaceful march to the Campbell police station, half an hour's walk from the court building, as a mark of protest against the decision. He described the court's decision as "pre-planned" and said "there is now no hope left in the judiciary". Apart from the cries of reformasi, the scene outside the court seems orderly. Only 20 police offices were present.Meanwhile, former Lord President Tun Salleh Abas who was present in the courtroom expressed his disappointment with the decision. "I'm disappointed but not surprised," he told malaysiakini. 







Judges expected to deliver judgment individuallyJul 10, 07 10:15amThe Federal Court judges - Chief Justice Mohamed Dzaiddin Abdullah, who is also the chairperson of the panel, Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Steve Shim and Federal Court judge Haidar Mohd Noor - are expected to read their judgments separately. This process is expected to take about 45 minutes.Meanwhile, the crowd outside the court complex has swelled to about 400 with a team of riot police keeping a watchful eye on the crowd. Earlier, an unidentified man was taken into custody by the police for distributing some leaflets.

Reformasi supporters at court, decision awaitedJul 10, 07 9:20amA large crowd of about 200 have gathered at the Sultan Abdul Samad Federal Court complex since 7.30am this mornin to wait for the final verdict on ex-deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim's appeal against his corrupt practises conviction and sentencing.The Federal Court is scheduled to give its decision at 9.30am. Anwar is appealing against the six-year jail term passed by the High Court in 1999.Anwar arrived at the Federal Court from Sungai Buloh prison at about 8.40am.The court authorities have restricted entry into the courtroom, denying many Anwar supporters the opportunity to listen the verdict. Only 20 journalists are allowed to cover the decision.Many Anwar supporters are gathered in front of the court complex, shouting reformasi slogans. Police are seen observing the situation from a short distance away.Anwar's daughter Nurul Izzah is present at the court while her mother Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is unable to attend as she is away in Australia."I am pensive about the case. I don't know how it will turn out but hope that justice is upheld," Nurul Izzah told malaysiakini.Everyone is waiting for the verdict and malaysiakini will bring it live to our readers.

Saya tidak tahu bagaimana keputusannya nanti, tetapi saya berdoa agar keadilan akan dipertahankan," katanya kepada Malaysiakini.Kira-kira 200 orang berkumpul di luar bangunan mahkamah di Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad sejak awal pagi, bagi mendengar keputusan rayuan Anwar terhadap hukuman penjara ke atasnya yang dijatuhkan oleh Mahkamah Tinggi pada 1999.Anwar tiba dari Penjara Sungai Buloh kira-kira jam 8.40 pagi. Tidak semua orang dibenarkan masuk ke dalam mahkamah, dan hanya 20 wartawan dibenarkan membuat liputan keputusan mahkamah pagi ini.Manakala penyokong Anwar yang berhimpun di luar bangunan mahkamah, melaungkan slogan reformasi. Anggota juga polis yang ditempatkan di sekitar kawasan mahkamah untuk mengawal keadaan.
