A powerful explosion has rocked a Western-style shopping mall in
Kuwait City shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday local time,
sending a large plume of smoke into the air.
The explosion has now been attributed by Kuwaiti officials to a
"silkworm" missile that was most likely fired by Iraqi forces
in Basra. Just yesterday, Coalition military officials said that
they had successfully destroyed a missle battery in Basra
that some 11 previous missles had been fired from. Considering
this attack occurred in the middle of the night when the
shopping mall was closed, it appears the iraqis were trying to
make the point that their missle capability is still intact,
rather than with the intension of killing Kuwaitis. One minor
injury has been reported.
A Kuwaiti official, who spoke with the Associated Press on
condition of anonymity, said the explosion occurred near Souq
Sharq, one of Kuwaits largest malls, and the city center. A
policeman near the scene told Reuters he had seen a missile
come in, and at least one local television station was reporting
the blast was the result of a missile attack however no air
raid sirens preceded the explosion, which rattled windows far from
the site.
There ae growing fears now that coaltion forces heading towards
Baghdad may be targeted by Iraqi missles that are obviously still
able to fire from Basra

Taliabn Online: KUWAIT, An American cruise missile Blasted a shopping
mall on the waterfront in the Kuwaiti capital. Witnesses saw a piece
of metal with the number "5420" in red. The words ``place'' and
"protractor" could also be made out. These and other fragments were
put in white bags that they took away.
Witnesses reported hearing no air-raid sirens. Kuwaiti officials who
examined the fragments said they were actually from an errant American
cruise missile that had been fired from the Persian Gulf toward Iraq.
"It was an American cruise missile, we know from the markings and
writing on it,'' said a Kuwaiti police colonel who did not give his
name. ``It doesn't go up, it comes in low from the sea, and that's
why there was no alert.''
Another Kuwaiti official said that he too believed the missile to
have been American and it that ``came from the sea.'' He then added
that ``it was a mistake, it was a mistake'' that it had struck Kuwait.
There were no immediate signs of casualties.
The Americans, despite the evidence, said it was too early to tell
what had happened or whose missile it was.
