Salut Robert,

J'écris en anglais, donc tout le monde comprend! ;~)

In my experience Linux will work to some extent on pretty much any
laptop. The things to look out for are these:

- What graphics card does it have? Get nvidia if you possibly can. If
you are doing anything that needs to render graphics of any speed then
make sure you get something which is not one of these devices that does
not have its own dedicated graphics card.

- The on board web cam is unlikely to work.

- Try and get a laptop with a wifi card that has Linux drivers. For
example, Intel 4965.

Once you have found the laptop you want hardware-wise, get on to Google
and put the model number and Linux. You can bet someone else has done it
and posted how they have got on.

This is a good site too:

I've been using Mandriva on laptops for eighteen months and found - on
previous versions - it struggled a wee bit with WiFi and the Intel HD
sound cards (although that was the same with desktops), but 2008.1 has
ironed out all these issues and installed very nicely on my Zepto.
(Zepto only do up to 15" as the largest screen, sadly.) Mandriva is a
really brilliant distribution these days and it staggers me that it's
not more popular. I've tried Crossover Office on Mandriva and it worked
with MS Office very well.

The other issue to consider is whether you want to pat the Microsoft Tax
(this is why I chose Zepto to an extent as they sell without OSes if you
wish).

Something like this *might* be nice, but whether they'll ship to France
I don't know...

As far as your printer goes, if it works on your desktop it will work on
your laptop!

On the topic if dual booting - make sure you install Linux last as the
evil Microsoft installer will just wipe anything else that's on there.

Bon chance.

Rob
