This is just a vote in support of producing the next HAPI release, with
version 2.5.1 included. Granted that version 2.5.1 is not very different
from version 2.5. However, if the messages say "2.5.1" in MSH-12 then the
messages won't parse. HL7 has finally approved an Implementation Guide for
reporting from Laboratories to Electronic Health Records (EHRs) based on
v2.5.1. All the example ORU_R01 messages have "2.5.1" in them, so when I
extract them and run them, they fail. Soon Laboratory Infromation
Management System vendors will be producing those 2.5.1 messages and I will
have to accept them. I need to get ahead of the curve and prepare. So the
sooner there is a v2.5.1 HAPI, the better.

The U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are pushing a solution
for receiving and parsing HL7 message that uses the proprietary products
Rhapsody and Symphonia from Orion Software. I would rather continue using
HAPI, and perhaps write a system based on HAPI that other states can share.
But 2.5.1 is soon going to be essential to my being able to do that.

I gave a talk on HAPI and how to use it to representatives of all the
Departments of Health of all the states in Atlanta at the annual Public
Health Information Network convention last August. The talk was well
received. One of the things I said was that, since most of HAPI is
generated from the HL7 version definitions in Microsoft Access, when a new
HL7 version such as 2.5.1 becomes available it is be rather straightforward
to generate the new version classes. That is my understanding from what I
know of the HAPI architecture. So I am eager for this to happen.

I suppose in theory I could get hold of the Access files and build myself a
whole HAPI release from the HAPI core. But even if I thought I could pull
it off I think that would be inadvisable. I consider University Health
Network to be the entity entrusted with rebuilding HAPI with each new
release. Nevertheless I would feel less nervous if they published a
roadmap and approximate time frame for delivery.

Thanks for HAPI. Looking forward to continued use.
