Yes, ACPI works fine unless you have some older/low quality hardware
that's not designed for it.

IIRC, the only way to disable ACPI is to disable it in your BIOS and
then __REINSTALL 2K/XP__

Even if you remove/uninstall from device manager, it isn't really gone.

There's an F8 startup option with win2k install that lets you install as
a standard PC.

Please note that if you do disable ACPI you'll get some obnoxious side
effects. Among other things, your computer will no longer power down on
its own when you select shutdown. You'll get the "It's now safe to turn
off your machine" message and be forced to do it manually.

Personally I'd try to resolve it hardware-wise. ACPI isn't a new and
buggy standard - it's established and works fine. My hardware isn't
state of the art by any definition. I have a 3com PCI NIC and a GeForce
2 MX. If you're getting crashes with ACPI while running an ISA NIC and
SCSI card, well let's just say you shouldn't be blaming ACPI :)

I've got 8 devices on one IRQ, and my system is not unstable in any way.
I leave it
running for weeks at a time without restarting, and I never shut it off.

As you can see:

http://www.thesillyzone.com/device.gif

my video card and TV card are on the same IRQ. However, I can play HL in
a window with
the TV in a window on top of HL, WHILE USING my network cards for
networking, WHILE
USING my sound card for sound, WHILE USING the Maxtor card to control my
hard drives.

Wow! 5 devices in use at the same time, all on the same IRQ, with
uber-stableness.

IRQ's arent the issue here.
