Not necessarily. If the file is completely in DOS format a current
vi will not show the CRs but display a [dos] at the status line
after the file got loaded. Only if you have a file with mixed DOS
and Unix line endings will the CRs actually be show.

Also, CVS will only convert a file from one format to the other
while checking in/out, if it is either purely DOS or Unix. If you
again have a file with mixed line endings CVS will not touch touch
these. Have a file with mixed endings converted to the proper
format and then check it back in.

You often end up with files with mixed line endings when you apply
a patch which was created under Unix to a DOS file or vice versa.
