Tony, following is not the problem, understanding it.

debugging requires the steam.dll to be in the half-life dir
so I put it in there but the game will no longer work because some "The local
Steam service is not running" error.
I put steamapp.cfg but that doest do anything. Then when I delete the dll and
leave the steamapp.cfg i get the same error. Neither files work! How do i set
up steamapp?
here is mine

SteamAppId=70
SteamAppVersionId=0
SteamInstallPath= c:\steam\steam.exe
SteamAppUser=whocares

furthermore what is SteamAppUser. my email, or my username or does it matter?
