Not sure what this exactly has to do with coding, but yes the FOV is not usually changeable via a client side cvar or other. This is basically cheating.
Traditional value of fov of 90 is too much conservative for real gamming. I think have sense to able some flexibility. Say... set 90, but able +-10 so some gamers can set 100 FOV and others still use 90.
And it is the job of mods to implement their own particle systems. I don't think Valve has much interest in doing this for them, especially right now. ;)
Yes but mods are basically branchs from standard SDK. If you want to add a new feature to all mods, a good way its to release a new SDK with that feature.
The original particle engine is very well designed and elegant, but actually its somewhat outdated and too much conservative. That its good for multiplayer games, but its dull for SP.
Not everyone that WANT a updated particle engine can or will (by lack or time?) code one.
Other option is to write a good one, as a community effort, and provide in a "plugable" way for others mods. Thats Is even better than clutter the original SDK.
About "especially right now",... Whats its Valve coders doing actually? bugfixing mp rare bugs? I know the engine is done, the game is done, even you can download the whole enchilada on steam. So the ZEN question is.. What Valve coders do after Half-Life2 gold? ... HEE!!.. a good response can be to release community goodies, specially 3 or even 4 guys from this list will love to see the next SDK released NOW.
