People, is that true that even if you have RETAIL version of HL2 you must connect to internet? Can someone please explain this?
ALso my friend from UK told me that after he installed DVD version it took him 30 mins with Broadband internet to download some additional HL2 files - WHAT TO DO IF I LIVE IN UKRAINE AND HAVE DIAL-UP MODEM? WILL I'LL BE ABLE TO RUN HALF-LIFE 2????????????????????????/
my 0.02 €
imho:
even the retail DVD contain cypher files, the installer copy that files, but seems not contain the decypher key, so its need to contact a server over a safe and sanitifyed line to download the key (Maybe 20 bytes?), seems this conexion also download other data, maybe optional stuff but withouth a checkbox to force not-download. Maybe this is modem-friendly, but Steam its not. Steam looks like designed for broadband.
the installation its very long because Valve really fill the DVD with huge maps, nice textures, cool sounds, great gameplay, ...copyiing that files takes long, too much data, slow drives,,... a fast DVD and HD will short that.
the uncypher its also slow, a good CPU may short that.
After that, even the first run takes looong, and loading the menus takes loong, and finally loading the level is somewhat long, not that long, less than Battelfield 1942 :D
And RUN!..
the game its pretty, fun, new, ... Its a good idea to pay the 50$ for it.
you may also move phisically your computer to a location with good inet conection, "activate" the game, then move phisically the computer to your home. This is anoying as hell, I know.
