OK, I think we've found the cause of this. As a workaround for now, see
if you can keep your mod directories to be 6 folders deep or less.

Hi Ian,

I'll take a look into this. Can you tell me - when you had the .svn
folders there, how deep was the overall directory tree (relative to the
game folder), and how many files were in it total? Thanks,

Taylor

Subject: [hlcoders] Steam crashes when we load our mod configuration
into Hammer

Apologies if this is too much off topic. I'm not subscribed to
hlmappers as I'm a coder not a mapper. This is also my first post to
hlcoders so go easy on me!

Some of the mappers on our mod have been complaining recently about
Steam crashing when they startup Hammer and select our mods game
configuration. When they asked us coders to try hammer we also found
that we had the same problem.

The error occurring in steam was
---------------------------
PostCondition Assertion Failed
---------------------------
Name: FindCloseSuccessful
Program: C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe
File: Src\FsRemote.cpp
Line: 373

bCloseSuccessful
---------------------------

and this would eventually lead to the error in Hammer "Can't load
FileSystemOpenDialog.dll" once Abort was chosen

It was only the configuration for our mod that caused Hammer to fail
in this way as the other configurations were fine. After a while spent
examining this problem by comparing the output of Filemon from our
mode and another working configuration, I noticed that Steam was
enumerating through all of the .svn folders in our mod folders even
though they are marked as hidden. After I deleted the .svn folders
Hammer loaded our mod configuration without any problems.

I don't know if this is a result of the latest steam update but as far
as I can see we haven't added many more folders to the mod since that
update, so this seems a likely candidate for a regression bug.

Surely Steam should be able to handle large numbers of files and
folders within a mod folder so this current limitation cannot be
right.

Regards
Ian
