It doesn't have to be a mod_studio to trigger that assert...that assert
happens if the model isn't a sprite...which it isn't...instead it should be
returning mod_bad, triggering this inequality:
    //Must be a sprite
*    if* ( modelinfo->GetModelType( GetModel() ) != mod_sprite )
    {
        assert( *0* );
        *return* *0;*
*    *}
