First time using this list..Hope I did things right!

For coding, you can use Microsoft's VS2005 C++ Express edition...I had trouble 
finding it my first time, so here's the link: 
http://www.microsoft.com/express/2005/download/default.aspx

Once you're done installing all that, read: 
http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Compiling_under_VS2005

to set up the compiler. Then, before changing anything, try compiling it. 
There's about 6+ warnings, but there's 0 errors. If you have any errors it 
won't compile properly, and you've got to figure out where you messed up...

Once you've got compiling done, I recommend the Developer Wiki that Jeremy 
linked. There's a page there called "My First Mod." Try that one.

Coding is pretty hard, but it all depends on what you're trying to get into the 
game. Good luck with your mod!
