anyways yeah I had been trying to debug it but it wasnt breaking anywhere. The code got really messy so I scrapped it and started again the other way around checking your dynamic_cast (still dont understand how that works) for the npc and then else pWeapon = getactive weapon etc for the player and it works perfectly. I guess I just needed to look at it from a different angle.
