SourceSafe is a bit different to SVN, but SVN is alot like CVS (as well as most new version control systems). You should try to get some more knowledge of SVN because its probably the best solution (and sounds like you are using it wrong). But SourceSafe is horrible, I used to use it at work, and it got corrupt so many times.
