1) You must have a bad switch or a low end one. My colo has a monitor/mouse/keyboard switch, I have a w2k server, so guess what? It's worked fine for over a year and a half. I think the key there is that the switch has to maintain power to the mouse port even if you're switched to another set (server).
2) You can always go USB for the w2k server. That works great!
