If you are talking client side, just when you start HL, you can select update. If you are talking Windows Server side, go to a DOS prompt and do the HLDS update. Instructions are in your HL readme.txt file If you are talking about a Linux server, you will need to run the HLDS update tool once you DL Steam. Others may give you more detail. This is just an overview that will get you started.
