As a server admin you do have a small amount of choice.
You can run with auto updates off. For GSP's this should be the default
as you don't want 100's of machines downloading the same update and
consuming your NET bandwidth. I know we run this way. The issue
comes when there is incompatibles between server / client.
Personally the biggest issue I've found with steam is the delivery
method itself. With a manual download u can always go to a different
site do download if the primary one is busy / very slow. With steam
you don't get a choice and is sits their for hours and hours every
time a release gets put out trying to download from either overloaded
or badly connected servers. N.B. Locality does not guarantee speed,
I often end up downloading files from the US from the UK as they
are quicker.
This should not be an issue by providing one or more of:
1. A content server list to choose from with the option to save a
preference ( default ).
2. A method to tests download speeds to potential servers.
3. The ability to download from multiple places simultaneously
( ala bit torrent ).
4. The option to update multiple / all mods at the same time
therefore reducing bandwidth requirements as it removes the
multiple tests for the common components.
These are not hard things to implement really and would greatly
help both server providers and clients.
