With regard to the power requirements of the 6800...

Taken from: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1583529,00.asp
<snippet is from what to buy chapter of article>
"Advantage ATI:

Lower power draw
Single slot card--will fit into small form-factor PC cases like Shuttle's
3Dc normal map compression

Advantage nVidia:

Shader Model 3.0 support
Better OpenGL performance
Better performance at the $399 price point

The downside with nVidia is the power draw, which goes from bad to worse
with the GeForce 6800 "Ultra Extreme". The 6800 Ultra already has a peak
pull of 110-watts, and with an 11% up-tick in the engine clock, the power
draw likely goes up to around 125-130 watts. To wit, we had to run out and
buy a new 550-watt power supply in order to be able to test the "Ultra
Extreme". That set us back $120 bucks, though less expensive models can be
found for around $60."

A normal Intel 3.2G PIV CPU requires about 9.5A and the 6800 requires 9.17A
or 110W of power. The CPU requires at least 114W. By itself, the 12V rail
would need 224W alone to support the 6800. This requires a PS that is able
to supply at a minimum 224W/12V = 18.7A current. Be sure to look at the
power supply specs, especially on the 12V rail, to ensure a proper fit
otherwise the CPU will get starved and this will cause erratic performance
or intermittent reboots.

ATI's specs are much lower, around 65W, so a standard supply will suffice
especially if it is sized for the 9800 or similar cards.

ATI cards
9600XT - runs Doom3 just fine with the Cat4.9 drivers.
9800Pro/XT
x800/x600

nVidia cards
5600 and below... don't bother, they are not an upgrade.
5900/5950 - if you think you must support nVidia
6xxx series cards - I have seen no tests done for HL2. Apparently do well
in Doom3.

Remember, as far as I know, Doom3 = OpenGL and HL2 D3D. Each card, ATI and
nVidia, both can play either one but I see something common here with what
happened several years ago... 3DFX and nVidia. 3DFX was supporting
Direct3D (D3D) and nVidia OpenGL. 3DFX supported miniGL which played OpenGL
games but not nearly as well as their competitors and the competitors
(nVidia) could not play the D3D games as well as 3DFX (e.g. UT). Well, as
it was, the new up and comer was OpenGL, and they won the war but today...
D3D is taking hold... I guess the Graphics Card you decide to purchase will
be a personal choice based on games you play.
