The thing is, Steam reports the ping incorrectly on the first update
of the list. If you do a "quick refresh" after the first update of the
list, you will get much more accurate pings.

I would attribute this to the application pinging several IPs
continuously and at one time...during the intitial server list update.
AFAIK, it was like this with the old server list as well (< 1.6). Do
you not think that would cause some slight bit of network congestion
that would affect the ping, not to mention the cpu used to process all
of those pings? There have been times that when I was updating my
Steam client server while also web surfing that a site/page would not
load in my web browser until the server list update completed. I know
it isn't CPU alone, and I am on Cable, so the congestion caused by the
serverlist update causes substantial network traffic, if only for a
short time, enough to make the server list pings erroneous.

However, my server seems to haver disappeared off the list to, so
erroneous pings are not as big a concern to me.
