Could be that you haven't loaded a map try using: ./hlds_run -game cstrike +ip 64.21.131.104 +map de_dust

This is on a brand new FreeBSD box with linux_base-8 installed. I downloaded ftp://hlserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/linux/hlds_l_1120_full.bin and extracted it in /usr/steam and moved the hlds_l folder to /home/rob/hlds_l
I then updated it to the newest version ./steam -command update and tried running it with:
screen ./hlds_run -game cstrike +ip 64.21.131.104
