Thats not true. Only pre-release versions require the subscription. You can also reg on the forum without paying anything. Here are a couple links to download the stable (free) releases. I imagine the paid forum access is for a pre-releases as well.

I am still researching it a bit so I have no hands on yet. Actually I use OpenBSD for my home Firewall/NAT box and that won't change. My WRT54G is just for education mainly.
