I switched back to OP4 and so far it's been rock solid. I did extensive
memory and disk diags, found no problems, wiped linux partition and
reinstalled
the whole stinking mess. I'm extremely pleased with
performance! So far my tests indicates that win32 hlds running under
wine/kde/linux is comparable to running it under Win2000 (see disclaimer
below). Is this the answer to
crappy linux binaries? Just run the win32 version under wine/linux? You get
the best of both worlds - the stability and security of linux (plus you
don't have to pay a small fortune to Bill Gates), and the stability of the
windows version of hlds.

Disclaimer - I don't have the bandwidth to really put it to the test, right
now I have 6 players and cpu is less then 10%. PIII/800, fps is around 80 or
so. This needs extensive testing before anyone can say that this is a good
way to go. Any brave souls out there want to give it a shot? Someone with
more horsepower and more bandwidth?

Hahaha unfreakingbelievable hahaha. It's up and running. I have absolutely
no idea how well it well perform. It's running on a PIII/850, so it isn't
a
screaming machine to start with. I'm running Slackware 10 with Wine. I
start
KDE, and from there start Windows (win32) hlds.exe. I actually copied the
files from my Win2000 box, since I couldn't get the Steam hldsupdatetool
to
run.

And it's on the Steam List, can you believe that?

Ooks Win32 HLDS via WINE via LINUX LOL Haha

Try ooksserver.no-ip.info:27012 if the above IP doesn't work

Join it if you dare. May lag. May crash and if it does, it won't restart
because I can't figure out how to get linux to restart it automatically
and
I can't get ServerDoc to run. And if you do join, let me know how it ran
:-)

PS - there are two players in it right now and it's using less then 10%
cpu.

And the console is borked. Player actions (deaths) do not appear, but
player
"say" messages do. Oh, hey, turn logging on and console message appear.
hmmm...no brain cells, must go to bed and sleep....
